Star Ocean: The Second Story for the PlayStation and it enhanced ports Second Evolution for the PlayStation Portable and The Second Story R for various platforms is an action role-playing video game with romantic elements. Each release has its own unique art style.

In an endless sea of stars, at the edge of the universe, a single fateful encounter is about to take place. The Gods have hurled a deadly meteorite into an unsuspecting planet, unleashing powerful mysterious and sudden chaos. Now, two people from different worlds will collide into a journey so deep, they might never make it back.

The game has mutable endings that are based on the choices the player makes in the game's private actions. Depending on the characters the endings can be romantic or platonic. Not just for the protestant Rena (or Claude if you play as him) but between all the party members as anyone in the party can be paired up with anyone.
